Regina Public creates new election boundaries

Regina public school voters will see some subdivision changes in 2016.
Regina Public will have new boundaries for this fall’s municipal election. The new subdivisions spread outward, reflecting some of the urban sprawl led by new P3 schools under construction. In one of the more significant changes, the historically progressive-voting Cathedral-North Central Subdivision 5 area has been split up, with Connaught and Davin school areas merged into southwest Regina.
Cathedral Area voters living east of Retallack and north of College will vote in the North Central school areas (Subdivision 5). Those living west of Retallack will join the southwest Regina and new Harbour Landing school areas (Subdivision 3).
Subdivision 5 was represented by Connaught School parent and education activist Carla Beck, who resigned in April after being elected as an MLA. Subdivision 3 is represented by longtime trustee and ex-Roughrider Dale West. West has consistently voted for school closures and mergers, and in the past has voted to merge Connaught and Davin into one super-school. He also supported the closure of Athabasca School in his subdivision.
Also among the changes, Thomson Community School will merge into south-central Regina, while Braun and Ferguson’s areas will change over to northeast Regina.

The new boundaries were approved by the Ministry of Education in early June, and passed by the board at their June 14 meeting. Regina Catholic Schools are not impacted because Catholic school supporters choose their representatives city-wide, rather than by subdivision.
School board elections will be held Oct. 26 in cities, towns and odd-numbered rural municipalities, and on Oct. 24 in even-numbered rural municipalities.
