As a fall-out from provincial funding shortfalls, Prairie Spirit School Division has announced an end to band program. Prairie Spirit serves 28 rural communities, 3 First Nations and 9 Hutterite colonies in the area surrounding Saskatoon.
“Band is somewhere people feel accepted and where we can express ourselves through music and work as a team..trusting each other through every tough piece of music or anything that comes as a struggle for us,” says Shawna Langer, who started an online petition.
Band has been pushed to the margins of the school day across Saskatchewan, making it vulnerable everywhere. This is not just Prairie Spirit’s issue – it affects us all!
