Community schools group makes a change

At its annual general meeting, the Saskatchewan Community Schools Association changed its name to the Saskatchewan Association for Community Education (SACE), and opened its membership to all schools. SACE identifies the following 12 core principles of community education:

1.      Relevant, culturally affirming, community related curriculum

2.      After school and evening programming (academic, recreational, social)

3.      Community use of the school (school is the center of the neighbourhood/community)

4.      Nutrition resources & healthy lifestyle programming

5.      Community partnerships

6.      Interagency collaboration

7.      Leadership development at all levels

8.      Parental engagement

9.      Effective, active School Community Council with representative membership

10.  Safe, respectful, welcoming environment

11.  Pro-active prevention and early learning programs

12.  Designated coordination of community education programming by a qualified practitioner, in partnership with a school based leadership team.
