Sask debate over military training gains national attention

Regina peace advocate Florence Stratton and Sask Party MLA Yogi Huyghebaert squared off on the March 5 episode of CBC’s ‘The 180’ on whether or not joining the Reserves, with a cash incentive, is a suitable part of the school curriculum. Judging by reader comments, military training for school credit has been implemented elsewhere in Canada – but it took Saskatchewanians to raise questions and spark a debate that now reaches across the country.
In related news, a group called ‘Stop Recruiting Kids’ has formed in the United States to counter the increasing presence of military recruiters in American highschools, after the American Public Health Association declared early military involvement is harmful to the longterm health of teenagers.
